STMBC History
St. Matthew was organized and obtained a written history on October 5, 1869. Our first facility was built on Sunny Island and pastored by the late Rev. Jake Johnson. It was through a vision and an open hearts that St. Matthew would construct its first facility. This building was large enough to hold 3 rows of pews, a parsonage was built for the pastor to live in, and burial grounds were established in which many of our fore parents are buried. We worshiped at the location for 66 years.
In 1935 water rose from the river forcing St. Matthew to relocate . The Odd Fellows and Ruth’s, a local fraternal organization and also members of the church, dedicated a half acre of land to us and we constructed our second church home. By the year 1984, we recorded 187 members which continued to increase. Besides worship, the church was also used as an educational center. The lodge graced us again by expanding our community, allowing us to use their hall to have school which became known as the Luckett Elementary School. Soon we became the educational center for the whole community.
Our pastors have been Rev. Jake Johnson, Rev. William Young, Rev. Robert Cleveland, Rev. P. H. McGruder, Rev. Dave D. Smith, Pastor Emeritus Rev. Joe S. Green, and our current Senior Pastor, Rev. Frank Jackson.
In May of 1985 we obtained ten acres of land where the church stands today. Since that time God has blessed St. Matthew to see ministries and membership grow at a rapid rate. We remain a church dedicated to preaching and teaching the gospel, firmly standing on the word of God with the mission of "Making Disciples".
